Petition against Shak Fiding

1.FIRST STAGE OF THE ARC CALIMA FINISHED IN DECEMBER 2007

With the aim of support the surveillance labor of the ARC SULA, Malpelo/MarViva Foundation execute a budget of " Inter-Institutional Alliance strengthening, Convention 016" project, which was funded by Conservation International and Walton Family Foundation for contribution for remodeling the second boat (ARC CALIMA) for control and monitoring in the Malpelo Fauna y Flora Sanctuary (FFS) and the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of Colombia. The first stage of the ARC CALIMA adaptation was finished in the middle of December 2007 in the time schedule. The second stage will be fund by the National Navy of Colombia. The objective of the different organizations is to launch the new boat in six months. The new ARC CALIMA will support the ARC SULA, which nowadays stay 20 days at the year monitoring the Protected Marine Area.

2.THE SATELITAL TAG 68322 OF ODONTASPIS FEROX TAGGED IN MARCH 2007 FELL OFF

On December 30th of 2007, the satellite Tag #68322 shaded off of the Odontaspis ferox, one female shark of about 4 meters, tagged by the 2000 apnea champion Fred Buyle, 60 meters deep in the "Bajo del Monstruo" in the north of Malpelo Island. The satellite tag recorded nine months of information on the position of the sharks and on the ambient temperature. In the first results of this information we could see that the shark exceeded 1800 meters of depth, with temperature around 2ºC. In the next weeks the information provided by the satellite tag will be analyze to obtain the shark tracks during these nine months.

 

3.PREPARATION OF THE EIGHTH SCIENTIFIC EXPEDITION UNESCO-CI/SEASCAPE

From December 6th to march 17th of 2008 the Maria Patricia Boat will depart from Buenaventura, for the eight scientific expedition of Malpelo/MarViva Foundation and the National Park of Colombia. This expedition financed by the UNESCO - CI/SEASCAPE project. In addition to the scientists of PROAVES, CALIDRIS and INVEMAR. Once again, Malpelo Foundation invited to the apnea champion Fred Buyle, with the aim of supporting the shark tagging of 47 scalloped hammerhead sharks (Sphyrna lewini) and 7 Ragged-tooth shark (Odontaspis ferox). Fred Buyle will receive the support of his friend and current free apnea champion William Winriam, who descended to 90 meters only with the aid of his arms and feet. The foundation scientifics will also gather the data of the six electro- acoustic tags located around Malpelo.
