CONTROL AND SURVEILLANCE AREA

ARC SULA

Efforts between several organizations for the adjustment of a boat have been combined in order to make control and permanent surveillance in the Sanctuary.

An interinstitutional agreement was signed between the National Navy, National Parks, Malpelo Foundation and Conservation International - Colombia, for the handling of the boat, the 25 of August of 2005. This agreement allows that the boat of the Colombia Navy – ARC SULA - will be permanently used for the surveillance and protection in the Sanctuary.

8 military conforms the crew of the ship who will be protecting the island in a permanent way from the illegal fishermen. In addition, this boat is equipped with a complete system for scientific studies and investigations.

All activity of fishing is prohibited in Malpelo, settling down like a refuge for the marine species, in where several stages of their life can be fulfilled, like the reproduction soon to disperse to other places. The illegal fishing on part of tunny boats and white fishing boats inside waters of the Fauna and Flora Malpelo Sanctuary will be controlled with the permanent patrolling of the ARC SULA.

With the success of the ARC SULA project and the necessity to reinforce the monitoring in the SFF Malpelo, at the beginning of year 2007, a new agreement has been signed between the Natural Parks Unit of Colombia, Conservation International Colombia, the National Colombian Navy and the Malpelo Foundation to fix the new boat.

At the end of December 2007, the first stage of the reorganization of the ship was done. The project has the objective to launch the boat in march 2009.

ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION AND ECOTOURISM

Conferences and interventions at schools, universities and international diving meetings are part of the Foundations strategy to communicate about the management of the Malpelo FFS.

The Foundation has participated in the Workshop of the Public debate of the Decanal National Education Plan, which brought out the articulation of science and technology, in relation with marine topics and education

 

The development of ecotourism activities supprot the Malpelo FFS conservation. Following the principle “to protect the natural environment it’s necessary to know it”, the Malpelo Foundation organizes diving cruisers as a disclosure and financial medium for its conservation projects. COMMUNICATION

For the continuity of the Foundation work, the communication is one of the most important parts.

We have different levels of communication:

 

- At national level, we took advantage of articles and news generated by mass media to present our profits and our work. We used any support of spreading like television, magazines, newspapers, Internet, folding and posters.

 

- The Malpelo Foundation also participates in national and international communication, tourism and ecological fairs to share the foundation's work and Colobia natural resources. The national fairs include FIMA in Bogotá and Feria Maritinma in Cartagena. The international fairs include Salon International de la Plongée (International Scuba Diving Fair), Paris, France; Festival de l´image Sous Marine, Marseille, France (Fair of the Underwater Image); the Fitur International Tourism, Madrid, Spain. and the principal diving show in Europe and US like the DEMA Show.

- The documentary "the Sharks in High Monitoring" obtained in October 2007, during the World-wide Festival of Submarine Image, the second position "Fin of silver" in Category A and the first position with the prize granted by the Museum of Oceanography of Monaco.

 

Yves Lefèvre, professional photographer of the Foundation is in charge to disclose images and videos of the Sanctuary, in European means and additionally it promotes the production of documentary on the environment middle of Malpelo.

The Colombian Commission of the Ocean, Conservation International and the Malpelo Foundation, during the formulation of the Television Development Plan 2008-2011, they suggested to the Television National Commission, the inclusion of the oceans within the contents of the national television: "Colombia: Country Maritime and Mega-diversity ".

LEGAL AREA

In 2006, the Malpelo Foundation began to gather the fruits of which it has seeded during the last 5 years. The main objective to conserve the Sanctuary of Fauna and Flora Malpelo has become stronger with the agreements celebrated with National Parks of Colombia and the Navy of Colombia and with Conservation International.

COOPERATION

The protection of the environmental is not possible without the support of other organizations.

- At national level, an agreement between National Parks of Colombia, the National Navy and Conservation International was created with the objective to reinforce the control and surveillance of the Fauna and Flora Sanctuary of Malpelo with the ship ARC SULA, to avoid the illegal fishing within the area.

- At international level, we worked with international organizations that help to create and develop projects of investigation and conservation in the Sanctuary.

Additionally an agreement of cooperation has been signed with the purpose of making a coherent work for the protection of the Marine Corridor of Conservation of the Tropical Eastern Pacific.
