PRESENTATION

The Eastern Tropical Pacific Maritime Corridor for Conservation (CMAR) is a wide and unexplored maritime area that conects most of the Marine Protected Areas of this part of the Pacific ocean and include Coco island (Costa Rica), Coiba Islands (Panama), Malpelo y Gorgona Islands (Colombia) and Galapagos Archipelago (Ecuador).

The Galapagos islands, Coco , Coiba and Malpelo have been declared as World Heritage sites by the UNESCO. The CMAR covers a maritime area of 221 millions of hectares, includes five National Parks and combines the Exclusive Economic Zones of four countries. It is considered as one of the most biologically diverse zones in the world and with a high degree of endemism, ecological innerconectivity and complex oceanographic characteristics resulting from the convergence of 8 marine currents.

The pressure that comes from illegal and unregulated fishing in the CMAR and the lack of scientific investigation, are threating the integrity of this huge and important maritime ecosystem
